Ford Boosts Police Interceptor Sedan Performance and Fuel Economy with New 3.7-Liter Ti-VCT Engine

The new Ford Police Interceptor is getting another boost under the hood with the addition of the 3.7-liter twin independent-variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT) engine, offering law enforcement agencies fuel economy with more power.

The 3.7-liter V6, now available on the Police Interceptor sedan, delivers a performance increase to 305 horsepower and 279 lb.-ft. of torque while also achieving increased fuel economy of 25 mpg on the highway, 18 mpg in the city, and 21 mpg combined. The horsepower and torque ratings are the highest of any naturally aspirated V6 engine offered for pursuit-rated sedans.

“This combination of great performance and top-notch fuel economy means law enforcement agencies won’t have to compromise power or fuel efficiency while getting the job done,” said Bill Gubing, chief engineer for Police Interceptor.

Ford’s Police Interceptor engine strategy provides a V6 lineup that performs better than V8 engines of years past. The Police Interceptor sedan lineup now comes with three powertrain options, allowing police to choose the powerhouse that best meets their patrol requirements. The Police Interceptor sedan is available with a standard 288 hp, 3.5-liter V6, the new 305 hp, 3.7-liter V6 and the performance powerhouse 365 hp, 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost® engine.

To develop the all-new Police Interceptor, Ford engineers worked hand in hand with Ford’s Police Advisory Board of law enforcement professionals, who provided input on key vehicle attributes such as safety, performance, durability, driver comfort and functionality.

Building on Ford’s safety leadership, Police Interceptor is engineered to pass 75-mph rear-end crash testing. Both sedan and utility Police Interceptors recently earned top safety ratings in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s New Car Assessment Program testing, which combines vehicle performance in frontal and side-impact crash tests and resistance to rollover.

Dodge Charger Pursuit to Offer Segment’s Most Advanced All-Wheel Drive (AWD) System

In response to police-fleet customer demand and with input from the Chrysler Group’s Police Advisory Board, the already well-received Dodge Charger Pursuit will offer an available all-wheel drive (AWD) system with the 5.7-liter HEMI® V8 engine. This will be the most advanced all-wheel-drive (AWD) system in the segment, delivering maximum all-weather traction and fuel-efficiency.

The segment-exclusive active transfer case and front-axle disconnect system automatically enables AWD for slick conditions, while maintaining the outstanding performance and handling inherent in a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) architecture. Dodge Charger Pursuit AWD is based on the record-setting RWD model that set the fastest-ever lap time in Michigan State Police’s Vehicle Evaluation Test history (1:33.70 minutes).

“Adding available all-wheel-drive capability to the already popular Dodge Charger Pursuit will broaden the Charger’s appeal to police departments that are accustomed to dealing with rough winters and adverse weather conditions,” said Peter Grady, Vice President - Network Development & Fleet, Chrysler Group LLC. “With the Charger Pursuit now offering dual capability of both rear- and all-wheel-drive, we’ll be able to meet the needs of our police fleet customers across the country.”

Chrysler Group engineers have already started testing the Dodge Charger Pursuit with the AWD system. The vehicle will meet the police-pursuit durability cycle set for RWD models that ensures the car can reliably handle the extreme conditions seen in police use. Police fleet customers will be able to start ordering the Dodge Charger Pursuit with AWD for the 2014 model year.

The 2013 Dodge Charger Pursuit features two uncompromised, high-performance engines that deliver world-class levels of power, refinement, technology and fuel efficiency – the legendary 370 hp, 5.7-liter HEMI V8 and the 292 hp, 3.6-liter Pentastar V6.
