Law enforcement is facing a crisis. In addition to tighter budgets, more restrictive legislation, changing demographics, and increased demand for services, law enforcement now faces a serious shortage of workers. How the law enforcement profession handles its current crisis will have an effect on the quality of law enforcement for generations to come. The purpose of this article is to describe briefly the scope of the problem, how generational changes have affected the workplace, and how law enforcement agencies can better retain their officers.
