A common myth among SWAT is that more time may resolve a dangerous situation where negotiations have failed--this is not the case. When the suspect fails to be reasonable, waiting only allows him time to plan for your eventual action.

Each year’s conference provides a greater roster of talented and experienced speakers, and this year will be no different. Many problems arise when negotiating crisis situations via cell phones which do not exist in negotiations conducted via land lines or hostage/throw phones. Crisis negotiation teams should be aware of these issues and practice mobile negotiation scenarios ahead of time so they are prepared for problems that may come up.
