The Ford Utility Police Interceptor, based on the Explorer, has undergone a long development process—a process that still continues. The Utility PI is being developed to do everything the Ford CVPI can do, only better, and some things the CVPI could never do. The purpose-built police vehicle will be produced in late 2011 for delivery in early 2012.

Each year since the 1978 models, the Michigan State Police has tested a variety of police package (pursuit capable) patrol vehicles. This year, the battle of the NextGen vehicles, the MSP tested 11 police package sedans and three police package SUVs/crossovers.

The formal police package for the Utility Police Interceptor, just like the NextGen Sedan Police Interceptor, is still under development. While they have both been formally “revealed,” both are still 2012 or 2013 model year police vehicles. However, even at this early stage, we know quite a bit about the Utility PI.
