FOCUS: Dodge Police Vehicles

Enhanced Safety Features Increase Situational Awareness

By Police Fleet Manager Staff

The Dodge Charger Pursuit, Dodge Durango Special Service and Ram 1500 Special Service together create a purpose-built police lineup designed to help protect those who protect us. Each vehicle offers proven capabilities and comprehensive safety and security features to trust when duty calls.

Every vehicle in their Law Enforcement portfolio offers multiple levels of protection and purposeful engineering. Safety and security features include: the available ParkView® Rear Back Up Camera 3; Rain Brake Support and Ready Alert Braking; a high-strength steel safety frame; available ballistic front-door panels; and much more.

Award-winning engines offer the power and performance officers count on in FCA police vehicles. The 3.6L Pentastar® V6 engine delivers optimal performance and efficiency. When the job calls for a tough V8, few engines compare to the legendary 5.7L HEMI® V8 engine. All-Wheel Drive (AWD) is available on the Charger Pursuit when equipped with the available 5.7L HEMI V8 engine. Durango Special Service is available with AWD on both its V6- and V8- equipped models.

Today’s fleet requires cutting-edge technology that is both functional and officer-friendly. Tech features include multiview full-color customizable displays, a Driver Information Digital Cluster Display with dozens of graphics that communicate vehicle data and available Uconnect® systems with hands-free voice-activated commands. In addition, the Equipment Mounting Bracket and the Patrol Package with Wiring Prep Package allow for the addition of police-specific communications and equipment.

The comprehensive Police Prep Package (available through Mopar® only) is tailor-made to address specific law enforcement needs. It includes a front and rear wire harness, a power distribution center, a siren speaker and bracket, a slide-out trunk tray, and a cooling fan.

FCA recognizes that the heroic men and women who serve and protect us must be equipped with the best-performing pursuit-rated vehicle, loaded with the latest tactical equipment and technology.

2018 Dodge Charger Pursuit

For 2018, the Dodge Charger Pursuit continues to deliver world-class safety and security and segment-first technology. The available Uconnect 12-inch display integrates law enforcement systems and innovative technology to improve safety and occupant space. In addition to the pursuit-rated hardware that includes 370 best-in-class horsepower and factory-installed Mopar upfit packages, Charger Pursuit offers the segment’s most advanced all-wheel-drive (AWD) system for maximum tactical performance, all-weather traction, and fuel-efficiency.

New features for 2018 include: Uconnect 7-inch display and rear camera are now standard. Back Camera View is a standard feature on the new 7-inch display, which activates the rear camera and lets officers see behind the vehicle while driving or stationary. In addition, new available Fleet Safety Group includes Blind-spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Path detection, and ParkSense rear park assist systems.

Available at no cost on the Charger Pursuit, the Officer Protection Package is designed to increase an officer’s situational awareness when parked and working inside the vehicle, using the Charger Pursuit’s ParkSense rear park assist system, ParkView rear backup camera, and Rear Cross Path detection to alert an officer if anyone is behind the vehicle (see sidebar for more information).

Charger Pursuit V-8 and V-8 all-wheel-drive (AWD) models deliver 370 horsepower for best-in-class acceleration performance needed for the demands of police-fleet duty use. Charger Pursuit V-8 set the fastest-ever lap time at the 2012 model year Michigan State Police (MSP) Vehicle Evaluation (1:33.70) at the Grattan Raceway in Belding, Mich.

Dodge Charger Pursuit V-8 AWD includes the segment’s most technologically advanced AWD system with an active transfer case and front-axle-disconnect system to improve real-world fuel economy. Other features include pursuit-rated hardware: performance-tuned suspension; load-leveling NIVOMAT shocks; 14.5-inch front and 13.8-inch rear pursuit-rated brake package; front- and rear-stabilizer bars; 18-inch performance tires on steel wheels; and two-mode electronic stability control (ESC).

Styling for Charger Pursuit draws on the Charger’s late-1960s heritage, while incorporating an aggressive look with sleek styling. Ballistic door panels for driver and passenger doors (Protection: NIJ Level III+) are just one of the many factory-installed Mopar upfit equipment items that include a three-year/36,000-mile warranty. This vehicle boasts up to an EPA-estimated 26 miles per gallon (mpg) highway with aluminum 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine with 292 horsepower, 260 lb.-ft. of torque, and available E-85 flex-fuel capability.

Dodge Charger Pursuit leads in tactical technology with a laptop-size 12-inch touchscreen display that integrates law enforcement systems and the intuitive and the award-winning Uconnect touchscreen system, allowing for quick toggling between vehicle controls and nearly every police-designed computer system that can be stowed in the trunk.

Pursuit’s instrument panel helps law enforcement officers keep their eyes on the road, and unlike third-party solutions that require a bulky console-mounted computer screen, does not obstruct front-driver and passenger air bags or interfere with occupant space.

For added upfit equipment control and capability, the available Uconnect 12-inch display also provides Charger Pursuit with a fourth auxiliary button, making installation of upfit equipment easier, as the system can provide the appropriate power, ground and fusing for a variety of LED, lighting, siren, computer, modem or camera systems.

Charger Pursuit’s Uconnect systems are engineered and tested to work with an officer wearing gloves, plus extreme operating conditions as low as -40 degrees Celsius and as hot as 85 degrees Celsius. Available Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) is to 5,450 pounds with 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine.

Driver-focused cockpit is designed to be a mobile command center with world-class materials, police-duty upgrades, and state-of-the-art technologies. For added convenience, the steering wheel includes remappable auxiliary buttons that can be programmed to operate aftermarket police equipment. For 2018, the Dodge Charger Pursuit lineup consists of three models: Charger Pursuit V-6; Charger Pursuit V-8; and Charger Pursuit V-8 AWD.

Sidebar: FCA US Extends Officer Protection Package to 2018 Dodge Charger Pursuit

The 2018 Charger Pursuit comes with FCA’s exclusive, no-cost Officer Protection Package, which includes the Fleet Safety Group. This package is designed to provide officers with rear vision and enhanced situational awareness when parked and working inside their vehicles. When activated, the rear-facing camera and sensors detect movement behind the vehicle, giving officers an extra set of eyes in the backs of their heads. When motion is detected, alert chimes sound, lights flash, windows roll up, doors lock, and images automatically appear on the vehicle’s Uconnect interactive touchscreen.

“The Officer Protection Package is the result of our continued focus on officer safety in our Charger Pursuit,” said Jeff Kommor, Vice President – U.S. Sales Operations, Fleet and Small Business Sales. “With critical input and guidance from our Police Advisory Board, we have enhanced the technology’s capabilities for the 2018 model year with additional sensors to provide officers with an expanded field of protection.”

First offered by FCA US and InterMotive Inc. on the 2017 Charger Pursuit, the Officer Protection Package will continue to be available at no cost to U.S. law enforcement agencies in the 2018 model year. The Officer Protection Package uses InterMotive’s Surveillance Mode Module™ with FCA’s Fleet Safety Group technology—ParkSense rear park assist system, ParkView rear backup camera, and Rear Cross Path detection—to alert officers when movement at the rear of the vehicle is detected.

The Rear Cross Path detection is new to the package for the 2018 model year. This system warns drivers of lateral traffic when backing out of parking spaces. When InterMotive’s module is activated—by simply pressing the Aux 1 button on the steering wheel—these additional sensors will be turned on, significantly increasing the area monitored and providing additional security for the officer.

If and when the sensors detect motion, a chime will sound to alert the officer of potential danger in the area. The officer can immediately see what is behind the vehicle via the camera monitor. At the discretion of the law enforcement agency, the tripped sensors can initiate any or all of the following: a signal for the doors to lock, front windows to roll up, reverse lights to turn on and tail lights to flash, all automatically, giving the officer a few extra seconds to react to the situation. This additional time can be crucial to a successful outcome.

The Officer Protection Package, provided by FCA US and InterMotive and easily installed (plug and play) by the law enforcement agency, is available effective immediately on all 2018 Charger Pursuit U.S. orders.
