Police Fleet Expo - West

Written by Scott Coy

It is time to gear up for the 2014 Police Fleet Expo - West in Kansas City, Mo. We have been working hard to bring you professional and state-of-the-art educational sessions, the most relevant exhibitors…and of course, outstanding networking opportunities.

For 2014, we are introducing a few new formats to bring you more choices in classes and the right mix of speakers to make them timely and informative. You have questions, and the cross-section of other fleet professionals coming with us to Kansas City will have the answers.

First, the popular Ride and Drive event makes its debut for our West event at the Kansas City Motor Speedway. Our manufacturer partners will have their latest offerings at the venue for you to see up close and personal both on and off the track. Ask your questions and then get the answers through the experts working with Dodge, Ford and General Motors. If that isn’t enough, find answers on your own as you experience the urban speed performance of today’s best police vehicles.

New this year will be a classroom session at the track discussing one of our most popular topics: upfitting. Designed to compliment, not take away from, the Ride and Drive experience, this session will discuss the process of safely and ergonomically packing your patrol car with today’s necessities.

On the first day of the educational sessions, we jump in with our manufacturer sessions.  Our friends from Chevrolet, Dodge and Ford will discuss their latest offerings, newest safety and technology features, and offer you priceless information on the who’s who within their organizations. Even if you’re not shopping for a new fleet, there is endless value to connecting names and information with the right people to help you get your job done.

Adding the Ride & Drive to these sessions, plus the Expo floor, you will have unparalleled access to the best in the business. The first day’s educational topics end with our attendee favorite, the agency dialogue. Here we bring the best in the business, you all, and the subject matter experts, the manufacturer representatives, and seat you in a room based on your agency size. This is the perfect catalyst to the next few days of networking and allows for an informal format exchange of high-octane information.

Then we will dive into exactly what you have been asking for in educational speakers. This starts with a general session called Cop Tech. We have enlisted help from the biggest names in in-car mobile computing for a roundtable discussion on what’s new and what’s coming. Their information will help you sort out what’s next for your agency and who you will be visiting on the Expo floor.

Part of the new format, bringing you more choices for classes, is the addition of a third concurrent session to broaden your educational base. We have formatted these sessions to literally offer something for everyone: the professional fleet manager, the fleet manager with other police duties, the shop supervisor, and the maintenance technician.

Our first grouping offers personnel management, SHOP TECH, and Fleet Management 101 sessions. This is followed the next day by three additional sessions covering shop management, tire forensics, and…well, check out the website for all the details and how to register.

Scott Coy, Police Fleet Expo Chair, is a lieutenant with the Western Michigan University Police Department. He brings the practice of private business into government as it pertains to his responsibilities at the department. This practice has created a bar of fiscal responsibility not only in the management of his department’s fleet, which he has been doing since 2003, but has been shared via published articles and in person with several agencies. Scott is also responsible for all technology deployed at the department from radios to computers, whether it be in the patrol car or office. He can be reached at scoy@hendonpub.com.
