Hornady Manufacturing of Grand Island, Neb. leads the way toward thwarting the Zombie Apocalypse with their new Zombie Max™ ammunition. Several pistol and rifle calibers, as well as a 12-gauge shotgun load, are available for the specific engagement of the undead threat.

Hornady takes the walking dead peril seriously by utilizing the technology they introduced with their LEVERevolution rifle rounds. These cartridges broke new ground several years ago with the innovation of the Flex Tip eXpanding (FTX) pointed red polymer noses. The pliable bullet tip allows rounds to be safely loaded, bullet nose to primer, in a lever action rifle’s tubular magazine. The aerodynamic pointed design and resulting higher ballistic coefficient delivers flatter trajectories and consistent bullet expansion compared to flat nosed bullets, extending the reach of many calibers.

Hornady’s Critical Defense® load was the company’s next step and it featured the FTX bullet matched with clean burning powders for use in handguns with shorter, off-duty, concealed carry-type barrel lengths. The result is less recoil and reduced muzzle flash, while still offering reliable expansion when the FTX tip pushes the bullet open.

Since there is no hollow cavity, the rounds will not clog with material they pass through (such as leather or denim) before delivering their punch. The red polymer nose compresses like a beach ball, forcing the copper and lead bullet to expand under virtually any condition. Critical Defense ® rounds are an excellent choice for use in smaller handguns.

Critical Duty™ rounds feature FlexLock™ bullets with a red polymer tip similar to the Critical Defense® ammo, but the Duty rounds use full power loads. These rounds are designed for full-size, duty-length gun barrels and are aimed to defeat auto glass, sheet metal, plywood, drywall, and heavy clothing. Hornady calls them “barrier blind” and their red tips prevent clogging and aid expansion just like the Critical Defense® ammunition. Critical Duty™ rounds are an outstanding choice for law-enforcement duty carry.

While the Critical Defense and Critical Duty ammo has been fine tuned to serve the needs of law enforcement, we all know specialized ammunition may be required to stop an oncoming zombie. Head shots are not guaranteed since research has shown it’s only the tiny brain stem that fuels a zombie’s bloodlust. Hornady has responded with a line of cartridges explicitly designed to neutralize the living dead.

Zombie Max™ rounds are available in the popular pistol calibers of 380 ACP, 9mm, 40 S&W and 45 ACP, along with the common rifle calibers of 223 Rem, 7.62x39mm, 30-30 Win, and 308 Win. and 12-gauge 2 ¾-inch shotshells. The Zombie Max™ cases are brass, except for the 7.62x39mm, which is steel. In contrast, the Critical Defense® and Critical Duty™ rounds use nickel-plated brass.

The Zombie Max™ ammo is identified by its special greenish / yellowish polymer tip.  It’s obvious this uniquely colored tip is really what causes its extreme effectiveness against a Zombie’s small brain-stem target area.

Despite the fact the load data on the outside of the Zombie Max™ boxes match the load data on the Critical Defense® and Duty™ boxes, Hornady is adamant the ammunition be used only on Zombies or for target practice. Even the boxes list a disclaimer that includes the warning, “No human being, plant, animal, vegetable or mineral should ever be shot with Hornady Zombie Max™ ammunition.”

Hornady has obviously done their research to come up with the ultimate Zombie annihilation tool. Perhaps there’s something about fighting fire with fire that has lead them to strongly state these loads be used only on infected cannibal corpses.

Biohazard AR-15 Magazine

Of course, anti-Zombie 223 Rem ammo is the most effective when fired from the correct AR-15 magazine. With the impending Zombie Apocalypse on the horizon, D&H Tactical felt a responsibility to help arm the surviving population. To this end, they have created the Biohazard Magazine.

Holding 30 rounds of undead-decimating 5.56 NATO firepower, their purpose-built mag will keep you off the menu. The exclusive Zombie Green coating quickly identifies this mag – and what ammo should be loaded in it.

The D&H 30-round mag is the real deal. It uses an aluminum body with a stainless steel spring. Importantly, the mag uses a high-visibility yellow Magpul® Unfair Advantage™ anti-tilt follower to assure 100 percent reliability. When they come at you, you need it to be reliable. So, keep your brains in your head — pick up a Biohazard mag.
