New World Systems recognized by ESRI
New World Systems has been named 2009 Business Partner of the Year by ESRI Inc. in recognition of the innovative use of embedded ESRI technology in New World’s Aegis® Public Safety software. Aegis improves safety and operations for public safety agencies across the country, with its Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) application.
Serving only the public sector for nearly 28 years, New World Systems has more than 750 customers made up of more than 1,500 public sector agencies.
Allen, TX City Council approves TriTech contract
TriTech Software Systems has been awarded a contract to provide a comprehensive new public safety solution for the city of Allen, TX. TriTech will be implementing its VisiNet enterprise solution of VisiCAD Command™ computer-aided dispatch, VisiNet Mobile™ data application and VisiNet Law RMS™ law enforcement records management for the city’s police and fire departments.
TriTech will provide system integration and project management in partnership with its subcontractors: ACS will provide its Firehouse fire records management software; Emerald Systems will provide its SENTINEL jail and facility management software; The Omega Group will provide its Crime View crime analysis software; Orion Communications will provide its AgencyWeb software; and mobile hardware and implementation services will be provided by Portable Computer Systems.
Tropos’ architecture enables smart grid systems
Tropos Networks, a market leader in large-scale outdoor wireless IP broadband mesh networks, introduced its GridCom™ architecture for building a wide aggregation network for smart grid communications using open-standard radios. IJIS Institute grows to 250 member companies
The IJIS Institute, a nonprofit organization that focuses on mission-critical information sharing for justice, public safety and homeland security, announced its membership has grown to more than 250 companies. The IJIS Institute is an inclusive organization, welcoming to its membership all companies that provide information technology-related services, products, and solutions to local, tribal, state and federal agencies in the public safety, law enforcement, justice and homeland security sectors.
From the initial 14 charter members in 2001, the institute has grown to include more than 250 member companies. The members contribute their time on projects that help local-, state- and federal-level information sharing initiatives. Member contributions include training and education, providing technology assistance to state and local governments and organizations, and serving on a variety of committees sponsored by the Institute and by the federal government.
DHS achieves milestone in interoperability
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Office for Interoperability and Compatibility (OIC) has formally approved eight laboratories across the country as part of the Project 25 Compliance Assessment Program (P25 CAP), which will provide more than 60,000 emergency response agencies nationwide with a consistent and traceable method to gather P25 compliance information on the products they buy.
Managed in partnership with the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Office of Law Enforcement Standards and a coalition of emergency responders and communications equipment manufacturers, the P25 CAP establishes an independent compliance assessment process to ensure communications equipment interoperates, conforms to P25 standards, and meets performance requirements.

Alvarion unveils BreezeNET B300
Alvarion Ltd.® announced the addition of BreezeNET® B300 to its portfolio of BreezeNET B family of point-to-point solutions. BreezeNET B300 provides far-reaching coverage with high-capacity point-to-point support for high bandwidth applications by using enhanced interference mitigation techniques, as well as adds new networking capabilities to reduce network overhead and improve quality of service.
The BreezeNET B300 platform provides a secure, reliable solution covering the 4.9 GHz and 5 GHz bands in a single software-configurable solution. BreezeNET B300 enables aggregated net throughput of up to 250 mbps and is ideal for high bandwidth applications, and complements the current BreezeNET B family.
PlantCML showcases next generation 9-1-1
PlantCML® demonstrated two next generation solutions at the 2009 National Emergency Number Association (NENA) Conference & Trade Show. PlantCML presented its next generation IP (Internet Protocol) Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP), featuring VESTA® Pallas™, and the Burke County, NC Satellite Disaster Recovery Solution, featuring the PlantCML Sentinel® Patriot® and Sentinel® CommandPost™ applications.
The pure IP demonstration (no local exchange carrier tandem involved) showcased the rapid and efficient handling of voice and data in an interoperable IP PSAP environment using currently available PlantCML NG 91-1-1 solutions.
Burke County’s satellite disaster recovery station, integrated by Wireless Communications, uses the PlantCML Sentinel Patriot and Sentinel CommandPost applications. This solution enables 9-1-1 calls to be answered and managed when fixed-location PSAPs become uninhabitable. The satellite disaster recovery station also provides other voice and data services such as the county’s CAD application, radio, mapping and administrative phone lines.
CGN & Associates enables federal interoperability
The State of Illinois recently participated in the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Office of National Capital Region Coordination’s Spring Ahead, a federal and mutual aid multi-jurisdictional electronic validation demonstration leveraging Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 201-compliant and FIPS 201-interoperable credentials. CGN & Associates Inc., a business performance consulting firm, provided program management for the state of Illinois FIPS 201 Interoperable Secure Credentialing Project. More than 30 organizations in 20 locations across the United States simultaneously participated in Spring Ahead, which consisted of eight scenarios.
Panasonic kicks off P-Tech Road Show
Panasonic System Solutions Co. announced it will again conduct its popular P-Tech Road Show exhibit and training event. The free Panasonic Training University Road Shows will take place in about 25 locations across the United States over the next few months and will showcase Panasonic’s newest technology solutions, which feature advanced levels of systems performance and integration.
This year’s road show program will focus on the following new technology developments: Super Dynamic 5 (SD5) is the next generation of Panasonic’s renowned imaging technology with 128x dynamic range and now with advanced built-in video analytics. The Mega Super Dynamic camera technology combines high resolution with superior image quality; streams H.264, MPEG-4 / JPEG formats for real-time monitoring and high-quality recording. In addition, the H.264 digital video recorder offers H.264 high picture quality encoding with 16-channel real-time recording, plus full HD display via HDMI. The Surveillance System Management Server combines flexibility with video management on a global scale. It incorporates analog, hybrid or IP-based video systems and can link up to 64 servers.
APCO announces 2009 P33 certifications
The Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International announced the agencies it has recognized as having achieved certified compliance in meeting or exceeding the APCO Project 33–Revised Minimum Training Standards for Public Safety Telecommunicators. The certification and recertification presentations will be made at the Distinguished Achievers Breakfast at the APCO International 75th Annual Conference and Exposition in Las Vegas on Aug. 18.
APCO Project 33 identifies the minimum training requirements for public safety telecommunications officers, telecommunicators, call takers and/or dispatchers. The standard specifies the minimum training requirements, in general, of operational personnel assigned to any public safety communications function and recognizes the need to supplement these basic competencies with agency-specific information.
MoDOT recognized for satellite network
Spacenet® Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Gilat™ Satellite Networks Ltd., announced that the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT), one of Spacenet’s key public safety customers, was awarded the Innovation & Technology Award for 2009 at the International Satellite & Communications Exchange (ISCe) Conference. MoDOT teamed with Spacenet and Orbital Data Net (ODN), the Missouri state contractor for satellite services, to design and implement its innovative emergency communications satellite solution.
ISCe recognized MoDOT for its innovative satellite solution, which enables the agency to fulfill its mission of ensuring public safety with constant access to critical communications during emergency situations. The solution, based on both fixed and transportable satellite systems, supports full Voice over IP (VoIP) and Radio over IP (RoIP) capabilities with Quality of Service (QoS), Internet access. It can interface with trunked radio systems and analog systems, enabling seamless transmission capabilities and control to communicate and interconnect remote tower sites by satellite, and interoperability with legacy systems.
LA parish deploys Spectrarep ActiveAccess
SpectraRep, a leader in standards-based emergency notification systems, announced that the Tangipahoa Parish (LA) Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management has deployed SpectraRep’s ActiveAccess™ desktop alerting solution to meet its emergency mass notification and citizen preparedness needs.
The deployment of the Tangipahoa Alert System will provide civil, AMBER, homeland security, and local and national weather alerts to citizens and businesses, as well as weather radar, hurricane tracking, and other local government information.
eLearning provider launches new business
Critical Information Network (CiNet), an emerging eLearning company serving customers across the public safety, healthcare and industrial operations sectors, announced the formal launch of its business operations. CiNet has acquired industry-leading training networks that have served the needs of police officers, firefighters, paramedics, nurses and other essential personnel for more than 20 years.
CiNet seeks to address customer needs through one of the world’s largest libraries of eLearning content, delivering solutions in compliance, safety, emergency preparedness, continuing education and workplace skill development. A key component of CiNet’s product platform is the ability to provide certification for thousands of corporate, industrial and government customers who successfully complete training courses.
BNSF Railway to use NICE security solutions
BNSF® Railway, a subsidiary of Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp., has selected NICE Systems to upgrade its current NICE video surveillance system to IP-based systems at 38 sites. The security project will provide a foundation for BNSF® Railway to deliver advanced security capabilities while migrating to state-of-the-art IP-based video surveillance.
NICE video surveillance solutions are currently installed at 120 BNSF sites, including rail yards, intermodal facilities, bridges, parking lots and other secure locations. BNSF Railway operates one of the largest railroad networks in North America with 32,000 route miles covering 28 states and two Canadian provinces.
Cellular Specialties expands wireless offerings
Cellular Specialties Inc. (CSI) has expanded its public safety product line to include the new DSP85 Digital Repeater. CSI’s enhanced Digital Signal Processing (DSP) offering enables first responders and other public safety personnel to achieve greater efficiencies in the performance of their duties by utilizing newly available, uncongested communication frequencies—formally analog TV frequencies. The company’s new emphasis on providing a complete roadmap of devices supports in-building wireless communications among first responder personnel.
DSP technology differs from other technologies used in the past because it achieves the highest level of performance and spectrum agility, allowing for frequency adjustments without expensive forklift upgrades. DSP filtering provides unmatched selectivity and can be finely tuned to help overcome difficult RF problems such as adjacent channel interference.
VidSys, ShotSpotter partner to improve response time
VidSys, a leading provider of physical security information management (PSIM) software, announced that it has partnered with ShotSpotter® Inc., a world leader in acoustic surveillance systems used for gunshot and explosion location and detection. ShotSpotter Gunshot Location System (GLS) alerts are interfaced with VidSys’ PSIM software to enhance real-time situation awareness and incident management. They enable law enforcement, first responders and operations center personnel with acoustic and video information of what occurred to more effectively verify, respond and resolve incidents.
The ShotSpotter GLS is a wide-area acoustic surveillance system that detects and pinpoints gunfire and explosive discharges within seconds, providing timely alerts to dispatch, command centers and to personnel in field-based support vehicles. In addition, every incident is stored in a historical database for retrieval of incident information to aid follow-up investigations, crime analysis and contribute to prosecution evidence.
