Latest Handgun, Shotgun and Rifle Police Ammo

Written by Jim Weiss

When law enforcement officers, agents or deputies have to use deadly force, they need their weapons to function and the ammunition to be effective. Here are some of the offerings from Federal-Speer, Hornady, Remington and Winchester geared for police use.

Federal and Speer

Federal Premium Tactical Buckshot is a shot shell system that delivers the tightest buckshot patterns available for law enforcement. These loads are packed in a fine, granulated buffer that prevents pellet deformation and ensures a smooth release for the wad. Tactical Buckshot offers a tight group, accuracy, function, penetration; the pellets are electrochemically plated.

When combined with the Flight Control wad, it gives dependable and predictable pattern performance because the buckshot remains in the wad until impact. Federal Premium Tactical Buckshot is offered in “reduced recoil” 8 pellet and 9 pellet 00, and a full power 9 pellet 00 for semiauto shotguns.

The Federal Premium Tactical® TRU® Soft Point was specifically designed for use in law enforcement’s patrol rifles based on the AR-15 platform. Federal Tactical® TRU® ammunition is engineered using Mil-Spec specifications for reliable functioning including Mil-Spec brass and low-flash powders. This line carries a full lineup of bullets – from fragmenting designs, to deeper-penetrating, barrier-defeating options.
Speer Gold Dot Duty Rifle Ammunition is now available for the 223 Rem and 30 Carbine. The bullets are optimized for expansion out to 200 yards – even from barrels as short as 10 inches. According to Speer, these new loads have outstanding feeding in short, very short and standard length AR platforms.

Exact tolerances and bullet uniformity of jacket thickness give Gold Dot rifle loads their accuracy and feature flash suppressed propellants and a muzzle velocity of up to 3220 fps. Non-corrosive, non-mercuric CCI primers mean reliable ignition under harsh conditions. Also, the new Speer LE Gold Dot 5.56 x 45mm and 308 rounds feature nickel-plated brass cases for smooth functioning and durability.

Hornady

The Hornady 223 Rem 75 grain HPBT TAP PRECISION® is a match quality load and Hornady’s heaviest TAP® (Tactical Application Police) offering in this patrol rifle caliber. This hollowpoint boattail can be used in 14.5- and 16-inch barrel firearms with either a .223 Rem or 5.56 NATO chambers and twist rates faster of 1 in 10 or faster.

This Hornady 75 grain bullet offers deeper penetration than the 55-grain and 60-grain TAP bullets, yet still penetrates less than most police pistol bullets. This bullet also penetrates barriers with minimal deflection and breakup. Whether fired through a barrier or not, this bullet generates very large and consistent wound cavities. This match-grade round is a good choice for .223 Rem sniper applications.

The Hornady 9mm 124 Grain TAP CQ (Close Quarter) is the lightest weight, highest energy bullet in the TAP CQ series for the 9mm. Loaded to a velocity of 1,110 fps, this optimal bullet weight produces reliable expansion and adequate penetration in all of the FBI Protocol ballistic gelatin tests. The combination of more energy and more momentum gives this round more cycle reliability than heavier 9mm bullet weights.

Hornady recently introduced Hornady Critical Defense ammunition for back-up, off-duty and concealed carry applications. Among the effects of fabric and clothing on the performance of personal defense ammo, clothing — especially heavy clothing — has a lot to do with how the bullet expands upon impact.

Conventional hollow point bullets often experience tip clogging as the bullet passes through light and heavy clothing, which diminishes expansion and causes unreliable bullet performance. Hornady Critical Defense ammunition eliminates clogging with the use of their patented Flex Tip® bullet. Upon entering soft tissue, the tip swells and imparts equal pressure across the entire circumference of the bullet cavity. This ammunition is available in the common off-duty calibers: 380 Auto, 9mm, 38 Special and 38 Special +P.

Remington Ammunition

The Remington Golden Saber HPJ is available the commonly used law enforcement calibers. The High Performance Jacket (HPJ) bullet uses the bullet diameter ahead of the Driving Band™ so the bullet is precisely aligned before the Driving Band engages the rifling. The driving band also locks the jacket and core together to maximize weight retention and core/jacket integrity.

In addition, a separate line of Golden Saber ammo is available – Golden Saber Bonded. The bullets in these calibers have the lead core essentially soldered to the brass jacket for the maximum weight retention after auto glass and car bodies. The bullet weight retention of the Golden Saber Bonded is almost always 100 percent, regardless of tactical barrier.

The nose cut (jacket serrations) in this hollow-point duty ammo cuts completely through the jacket for better bullet expansion, mushrooming that is controlled by the brass bullet jacket. In both lines of ammo, nickel plated cases provide reliable function in all types of pistols. The primer and its mouth are waterproofed for long term reliability.

The Remington 12 gauge Tac 8 Buckshot is available in standard and Magnum loadings, and provides reliability, consistency and stopping power. This loading has the addition of the one-piece compression section Power Piston® wad column, polymer buffering, and hardened 3 percent antimony pellets. The combination of these advanced features produces patterns 25 percent tighter than standard buckshot. In addition, Tac 8 is primer and mouth waterproofed for maximum reliability and weather integrity.

Remington Premier Match ammunition combines Sierra’s (amazing) MatchKing® bullets with the most stringent loading methods available today, to deliver true match-grade accuracy with absolute lot-to-lot consistency. Remington Premier Match covers the classic 223 Remington and 308 Winchester cartridges. It also covers the new Remington-exclusive, 6.8mm Remington SPC (Special Purpose Cartridge) and the 300 Remington Short-Action Ultra Magnum.

Available only from Remington, the Premier Match version of the 300 Remington Short Action Ultra Magnum provides shooters with velocities and energies previously only available in a long-action magnum platform. These inherently accurate short action cartridges provide for quick, second-shot follow-ups with less felt recoil than standard long action magnums.

Remington Disintegrator Lead-Free Frangible pistol ammunition offers totally lead-free, no-ricochet performance, with point of impact and felt recoil equivalent to standard lead-core pistol ammunition. Its accuracy performance is as good or better than the best duty ammo.

Disintegrator frangible bullets feature a high-strength, compaction-formed core, completely sealed in a jacket of electroplated copper. The metal powder core construction creates a bullet that easily withstands the forces and pressure of firing, while providing instant and complete frangibility against hard surfaces. Disintegrator bullets are made of compressed metal particles shaped into standard profile 9mm, 40 S&W, and .45 ACP specifications.

The copper plating on Disintegrator bullets provides a smooth, ductile jacket that enhances feed pistols, minimizes bore fouling, and virtually eliminates barrel erosion. Only .005-inch thick, it is enough for good rifling engraving, but too thin to ricochet. The manufacturing process produces a highly concentric core for excellent accuracy.

Winchester Ammunition

The Winchester Ranger® “T” Series handgun ammunition has a reliable combination of expansion and penetration that is enhanced by re-engineered petals in the patented SXT® hollow-point jacket design. Backed by Winchester’s comprehensive testing and training program, Ranger “T” Series is a handgun ammunition with excellent stopping power, outstanding penetration, expansion and weight retention, superior accuracy, wider and stronger six petal configuration, and consistent and reliable performance.

Winchester Ranger® Bonded handgun ammunition was specifically created to deliver maximum penetration through the toughest barriers. According to Winchester, this effectiveness is possible due to their proprietary core/jacket bonding process and is enhanced with a special hollow point cavity that acts in unison to control expansion. This leads to maximum weight retention and deep penetration through hard and abrasive barriers including auto glass.

Winchester Supreme Elite Series centerfire rifle ammunition is designed for tactical and patrol applications. For critical tactical shots, the Ranger .223 Rem with Nosler® Partition® Bullet or Supreme Elite .308 Win with XP3® bullet technology delivers penetration with controlled expansion through glass and tough barrier materials. For expendability, consistency and “match-grade” accuracy or maximum stopping power, use the Ranger® Ballistic Silvertip® and Supreme® Match ammunition featuring the Sierra® Hollow Point Boat Tail (HPBT) bullet.

The relatively new Winchester Supreme Elite Bonded PDX1 is offered in 9mm, 40 S&W. 45 ACP and 38 Special. The Bonded PDX1 technology has features that include a proprietary bonding process that welds lead and jacket together to work as a unit, controlling expansion and providing superior retained weight; a hollow point that works with the bonding process for performance through tough barriers and impact velocities / ranges.

The bullet jacket has notching – six segments that help promote positive, consistent and programmed expansion at a variety of impact velocities. The copper alloy jacket is contoured for maximum upset over a wide range of velocities / ranges. Upon impact, the six-segment notched hollow point expands to 1.5 times caliber diameter under a wide range of impact velocities. The nickel-plated case helps ensure positive gun function through smooth chambering and ejection.

If these perform like the Hornady LeverRevolution rodnus, SST, or GMX rodnus all of which use the Flex Tip technology than these will be winners. Ive come to have great respect for Hornady ammunition, and Im glad to see them add new technology to duty/defensive handgun rodnus. I agree with Richard, though, the FBI tests are OK, but not perfect indicators of a round that will get the job done. And I also agree with his shot placement comments if you want to win a gun fight train for body armor drills! Upper chest shots, head shots, and shots to the pelvic girdle!
