Department Name:

Herington Police Department

Department Head:
John Pritchard

Location:
Herington, KS

Description:
As the Herington police chief, I decided to restore a 1967 Dodge Coronet 440 into a vintage Herington police car for use in promoting a positive image of law enforcement and our agency in our community and in the area during car shows, parades and other special events. I selected a traditional black and white color scheme and used obsolete HPD door shield emblems on the car. All the equipment is vintage and correct to the time period including an actual HPD police chief badge and an old uniform shirt. There is an electronic mid-1960's siren and an earlier 1960's fender-mounted siren which is the most popular. A sign company produced black and white rear window signs that read, "Serving Our Community Past & Present". I frequently lead local parades followed by a new HPD police vehicle which helps tie in the message of the theme of continuous law enforcement service to our community. I obtained an antique personalized tag for the car which is "HPD 861". This is the abbreviation of our agency name and the chief's radio/badge number. This has been a community project as the body work/paint and mechanical repairs were all done locally. The local car club provided assistance and one member provided a needed part. People in the community would stop by the body shop to check the progress.
