We are currently switching our fleet over to the Chevrolet Impala 9C1.  With our 2007 models, I am only getting 9,000 miles on a set of front brake pads.  Has anyone had similar issues with the brake pads and is there an aftermarket pad available that offers better wear?

We offer brakes pads that usual last 1 1/2 to 2 times longer with our thermal balance process, we recently have expanded out of the Florida area, and have many test going in the Southeast and Northeast right now, in many police departments.  I would be glad to send you out a free set to try if you would like.  We also offer brake rotors that last 3 - 4 times longer, for about what you are paying now or a little more, let me know if you would like me to send you a set of pads.  More info can be found at www.thermalbalancebrakes.com.

We work with a lot of police units on brake issues.  9000 miles is actually pretty good for this car with OEM brakes in a police situation.  Some of our customers are having trouble getting 6000 miles.  The Impala does not have much "meat" on the front rotors, so you cannot normally cut them and reuse them.  I suggest that you look into cryogenically treated brake rotors.  (Naturally, because that is what we sell.)  We've tested the cryo process with both Link Labs and Greening Labs, two of the biggest independent labs that test brakes for the auto industry.  We see double to triple the life on these tests.  (We gave one large brake manufacturer about four times the life on their police rotor and they were a bit shocked.  Don't look for them to offer a cryo treated rotor.  They don't want to cut their market.)  Our customers see even more life than the tests indicate due to several factors.  In one test at Link Labs, we wore an untreated rotor until is was worn past the minimum thickness.  Then we put an identical cryo treated rotor through the exact same sequence.  It had .037" more rotor left at the end of the test than the untreated rotor, and there was visibly less heat cracking also.  Cryo also helps reduce warping.

Look over our web site at www.metal-wear.com and give us a call.  We can cut your brake replacement costs considerably and increase your up time with the car.

Mr. Tardif,

I would be interested in trying a set of your pads if you would like to send a set to my police department.

Our GM Fleet Rep told us to use Impala retail (not Police) pads until GM can come out with a Police pad similar to the 05 pads. We were getting 6000 to 8000 mi and wearing out the rotors, and have gone to 15000 and able to turn the rotors. Braking performance doesn't seem to be very different with the retail pads. We have tried Thermo Quiet pads on the 05's - they don't seem to stop as well. We had bad luck with Raybestos Quiet Stop (ceramic) on the 05's - warped and cracked the rotors. Haven't tried the new Raybestos Police pads yet. Has anyone?

I was getting 9-10k out of a set of pads and rotors.  The majority of brake failures were warped rotors due to hard high speed braking.  I did extensive testing with a number of pad/rotor combinations.  The best results came from a semi-metalic pad with Command Automotive cryogenic rotors which are warrrented not to warp for the usable life of teh rotor.  Brake maintenance intervals have doubled or tripled with no degridation in braking performance.  The rotors cost twice what a stock rotor runs, but with no warping, I can get them to wear 2 to 3 times longer.
