Is there a recall or is anyone having problems with the defrost/heater? Ours blow only cold air at idle and the engine needs to be under load for any heat to come out. Really not good with winter approaching

Talked to the dealer. Apparently there is a TSB from GM about this. Got it fixed in less than a day under warranty.

What year was this on? Did the dealer doing anything other than reprograming the HVAC module?

What dealership did you talk to that knew about this problem? I spoke with our dealership that we purchased our Impalas from, and they knew nothing about it. I was trying to find someone that was familiar with the problem because they could not even find a TSB for it. I know that 3 of our 2007's have this problem and I think that one of our 2008's have this problem. But the other ones are fine.

I have had the same issue with my 06's and 07's.  My dealer was also not able to find any warranty issues.  We did however find a problem.  For some reason, the cooloing system filler cap was not working correctly.  Replacing the filler cap on the pressurized system resolved the issue.  On three of the higer milage units (30k/yr.), we had to replace the cap twice.  We have now made the cap replacement part of our annual pre-winter maintenence and have no further issues since.

Our 06 had same problem, dealer said it had a bubble in the system, working fine now after $200 repair bill.

Make sure your cooling system is totally full of coolant with no air in system.  You must follow the procedure in the Service Manual for draining and refilling the cooling system and it is somewhat tedious-follow all the steps.  We checked the cooling systems for leaks and cannot find any.
