What do you do when Decommissioning/Retiring vehicles?
Do you clean them up for sale privately or auction?
Leave emergency equipment installed or strip it down.
How do you plug body holes, if at all?

I have been to alot of auctions and wonder if a vehicle would be more desireable if it were cleaned up and holes properly plugged instead of leaving a hole there or covering it with tape. Anytime a vehicle is retired, I clean it up really nice. Wash, wax, tire shine, clean up wiring, etc.

With the tight budget constraints if I decommission a police car it's really crap and damaged. We deinstall all equipment, lightbar, siren speaker, radios, computers, racks decals. We also drill out the trunk key lock and both doors and change out the ignition cylinder. Since these cars are all keyed alike, cab companies buy up our old cars and they show up yellowed and cab drivers brag that they can get into our police cars, and we found keys in their pockets. So now our stripping will go out to auction as is with just a cylinder keyed for that car.

I thought the law in SF was that all cabs had to be bought new and be replaced every 3 years.

Either way, WOW.

You are correct. The Taxi commission changed the rules recently requiring cab companies to purchase used cars with not more than 75,000 miles. Of course we surpass that. The new one which the cabbies hate is that they all have to be green. There is a war at the SFO airport, if you are CNG you go in front of the line for fares.

We clean them up and have just recently started using govdeals.com to sell them. In the past we took them to our local auto auction for sale. The cars usually have around 120,000 miles on them, but they are well maintained.
