By Police Fleet Manager Staff

Police departments across the country will soon have another option when it comes to enhancing their fleets. The 2018 Ford F-150 Police Responder™, the first-ever pursuit-rated pickup truck, joins the industry’s broadest lineup of law enforcement vehicles. The F-150 Responder is designed with nearly seven decades of experience spent on the road with American law enforcement. Proven SuperCrew® 4x4 off-road capability includes a purpose-tuned suspension, electronic-locking rear axle, and underbody skid plates, with the extra benefit of Hill Descent Control.™ In addition, brakes have been upgraded compared to the consumer F-150, and police-pursuit calibrated.

Ford’s F-Series legacy of quality, durability and strength lends itself to the demands of police use. The F-150 Police Responder utilizes a revolutionary body-on-frame construction using high-strength, military-grade, aluminum alloy in its body and bed, bolted to a fully boxed high-strength steel frame. In other words, this truck is purpose-built for police operations in the most demanding conditions and environments. It’s especially ideal for rural environments patrolled by sheriff’s departments, border patrol operations, and fish and game authorities. Additional F-150 Police Responder performance enhancements include an upgraded front-stabilizer bar for improved braking and handling and 18-inch alloy wheels with all-terrain tires.

“Ford’s 2018 F-150 Police Responder is the perfect all-terrain law enforcement vehicle,” said Stephen Tyler, Ford’s police brand marketing manager. “Aside from its industry-first on-road pursuit capability, this purpose-built pickup can comfortably seat five, while providing capability in off-road patrol situations for officers in rural environments patrolled by sheriff’s departments, border patrol operations, and the Department of Natural Resources.”

Capable of speeds up to 100 mph, the F-150 Police Responder boasts the highest horsepower and greatest torque of any pursuit-rated police vehicle. Under the hood is a powerful 3.5-liter EcoBoost® engine that generates 375 horsepower and a robust 470 lb.-ft. of torque. It’s combined with Ford SelectShift® 10-speed transmission to maximize acceleration and performance. In addition to Normal operation, available transmission settings include Tow/Haul, Snow/Wet, EcoSelect and Sport.

The interior of the F-150 Police Responder features a spacious 131.8 cu. ft. of passenger volume—the most of any pursuit-rated police vehicle. It also features the most front and rear shoulder and hip room, as well as rear leg room. Durable cloth front seats with slim bolsters are designed for officers wearing a duty belt. Rugged anti-stab plates are embedded in the front seat backs. The cab also features easy-to-clean, heavy-duty vinyl rear seats and flooring. The driver’s seat is 8-way powered; power is optional for the front-passenger seat.

Another feature is SYNC,® a 4.2-inch productivity screen within the instrument cluster, and another 4.2-inch screen in the center stack with audio controls for the 6-speaker sound. For added ease, windows, sideview-mirror glass, door locks, and the tailgate lock are power. Amenities extend to a Remote Keyless Entry System with integrated keyhead transmitter remotes, an Illuminated Entry System, and programmable MyKey® that can perform a variety of customized functions.

The F-150 Police Responder was designed and developed to meet the same federal fuel system crash standards as those of retail vehicles and other manufacturers’ police vehicles. Ford Police Interceptors are the only vehicles on the market designed for the 75-mph rear-impact crash test.

The F-150 Police Responder’s versatile 5.5-foot box for cargo is ideal for moving officers and hauling equipment to remote locations. A Class IV trailer hitch is standard, with a Trailer Tow Package available. A high-output 240-amp alternator accommodates extended idle times, while also meeting the requirements for additional onboard electrical power. The vehicle’s speedometer is specially calibrated for patrol use. An engine-hour meter and engine idle-hour meter are both standard equipment. An advanced brake system incorporates upgraded calipers, as well as specialized brake pads that use unique friction materials

designed for police-pursuit applications. Payload capacity is 2,030 lbs. with a standard class IV hitch towing capacity of 7,000 lbs. In both cases, they’re the best of any pursuit-rated police vehicle.

Based on the F-150 FX4 off-road model, the Police Responder’s 145-inch wheelbase sits on a high-strength steel frame, and features Ford’s high-strength, military-grade, aluminum-alloy SuperCrew body—giving it the largest passenger volume, payload and towing capacity of any pursuit-rated police vehicle. The tires are Goodyear Wranglers with DuPont Kevlar reinforcement, in size LT 275/65R18. The truck features best-in-class front and rear shoulder and hip room, as well as rear legroom.

F-150 Police Responder joins an impressive group of law enforcement vehicles. From its Police Responder Hybrid Sedan—the first pursuit-rated hybrid police vehicle—and market-leading Police Interceptor Sedan and Utility, to the Special Service F-150 and Expedition, Special Service Police Sedan and Transit Prisoner Transport Vehicle, Ford offers the right vehicles for a variety of law enforcement needs. The F-150 Responder will be available in the spring of 2018.
