SPECIAL REPORT: RIEGL’s RiCOPTER: Laser Scanning by UAV

Laser scanning for crime scenes is now up in the air with the RiCOPTER, RIEGL’s ready-to-fly remotely piloted airborne laser scanning system. The RiCOPTER is a high-performance UAV which can be equipped with the RIEGL VUX-lUAV survey-grade LiDAR sensor to offer a fully integrated turnkey scanning solution. The VUX-lUAV is a very lightweight and compact laser scanner, meeting the challenges of emerging survey solutions by UAS/UAV/RPAS, gyrocopter, and ultra-light aircraft, both in measurement performance as in system integration.

For years, RIEGL Airborne Laser Scanners have been successfully used in powerful unmanned airborne platforms. With regard to the specific restrictions and flight characteristics of UAS, the RIEGL VUX-lUAV is designed to  be mounted in any orientation and even under limited weight and space conditions.

Modest in power consumption, the instrument requires only a single power supply. The entire data set of an acquisition campaign is stored onto an internal 240 GByte SSD and/or provided as real-time line scan data via the integrated LAN-TCP/IP interface.

The benefits of laser scanning are widely recognized within the law enforcement crime scene community and the RiCOPTER offers new opportunities for acquiring data in dangerous or hard to reach areas. Such areas can be scanned in much less time, removing officers from dangerous situations and offering an excellent cost-to-benefit ratio as well.

This Class 1 unmanned aircraft system has a lengthy flight endurance of 30 minutes and can be flown at a maximum operating altitude of 550 meters. It has a maximum take-off mass of up to 25kg, with a maximum payload of 16kg and can be equipped with different sensors up to that payload maximum.

The RiCOPTER offers smooth and stable hovering positions and it also performs well in demanding flight maneuvers when challenging conditions exist.

The RiCOPTER is equipped for acquiring high-accuracy, high-resolution laser scanning and image data, with the RIEGL VUX-SYS, comprised of the VUX-lUAV LiDAR sensor, a IMU/GNSS unit, a control unit and up to four high-resolution cameras. These provide remarkable measuring characters such as 330 degree Field of View, 500,000 measurement/sec. and 10 mm. accuracy.
