Impact munitions took a
quantum leap forward with the release of the Defense TechnologyÒ 40mm eXact iMpactÔ sponge round in 1999. The 40mm eXact iMpact sponge
was a revolutionary step forward from the bean bag, single baton and multiple
projectile rounds then in use.
The 40mm eXact iMpact
originates from the XM1006 developed by the U.S. Army Research Laboratory. Defense
Technology licensed both the production and distribution of the munitions to
law enforcement from the U.S. Department of Defense. The arrival of the 40mm
eXact iMpact initiated the transition from 37mm smoothbore tear gas guns to
40mm rifled launchers in law enforcement.
The eXact iMpact utilizes a
lightweight, high-speed projectile that incorporated a plastic body and a foam
(sponge) nose. The projectile is spin-stabilized via an incorporated rifling
band and the 40mm launcher’s rifled barrel. Smokeless powder is employed as the
propellant for consistent velocities and unobscured vision.
The eXact iMpact is a
point-of-aim, point-of-impact direct fire round designed for engagement
distances from 5 feet to 100 (+) feet. The munition has been rigorously tested
to ensure that its impact energy and accuracy remain consistent across all
Tests for Effectiveness
While there isn’t any
existing single, definitive test protocol for less-lethal munitions, Defense
Technology utilizes several testing methods to assess risk of injury potential
due to blunt impact or penetration. These include a clay penetration test
adapted for non-lethal impact munitions from the NIJ0101.03 Standard test for
body armor; blunt impact assessment using the 3-Rib Chest Structure (3-RCS)
biomechanical surrogate developed by Wayne State University; and penetration
assessment using ballistic gelatin. Defense Technology’s product development
incorporates extensive human effects testing using all available test methods
to ensure the safety and less-lethal performance of its products.
The line of 40mm impact
munitions include the eXact iMpact Extended Range Round; Direct ImpactÒ Extended Range Round; Aerial Warning-Signaling Munitions; 6530 eXact
iMpact/Direct Impact 250-Shot Training Kit; 40mm 1327 Single Launcher with
Triple Latch; and the Launcher Carry System.
40mm eXact iMpact Extended Range
The Defense Technology 40mm eXact iMpact Extended Range Round (Part No.
6325LE) evolved from the design of the eXact
iMpact. It was designed for use in situations where greater accuracy and
deliverable energy is desired for the incapacitation of an aggressive,
non-compliant subject at greater distances. It is intended to
be used in applications that exceed the performance capability of the standard
eXact iMpact round. These include
elevated positions in corrections facilities, adding safe stand-off to arrest
teams with almost sniper precision of less-lethal options.
iMpact Extended Range Round has a minimum safe range of 10 yards and an optimal
energy range of 10–70 yards. It delivers almost double the energy at 70 yards
compared to the standard eXact iMpact Round. As with all Defense Technology
less-lethal impact rounds, the 40mm eXact iMpact Extended Range Round has
undergone extensive testing to ensure that the round is less-lethal when fired
within the optimal energy range and at the large muscle groups of the buttocks,
thigh, and knees.
40mm Direct Impact
Extended Range Rounds
Technology 40mm Direct Impact Extended Range Round evolved from the design of
the Defense Technology Direct Impact Round. It has a lightweight, high-speed
projectile that consists of a plastic body and a frangible foam nose that
contains a powder payload. As with the eXact iMpact Rounds, the Direct Impact
Extended Range Round is spin-stabilized via the incorporated rifling band and
the 40mm launcher’s rifled barrel. These rounds also utilize smokeless powder.

(Part No. 6323LE), marking (Part No. 6326LE), OC (Part No. 6320LE) or CS powder
(Part No. 6322LE). The crushable foam nose is designed to dissipate energy upon
impact while releasing the powder payload in a cloud approximately 2 yards in

eXact iMpact Extended Range Rounds and the Direct Impact Extended Range Rounds are capable
of outstanding accuracy. During our evaluation, the rounds consistently grouped
within 6 inches at 50 yards employing the Defense Technology Model 1327
40mm Single Launcher.
40mm 250-Shot Training Kit
The Defense Technology 40mm eXact
iMpact/Direct Impact 250-Shot Training Kit provides a low-cost way to train
through the use of reusable components that accurately simulate the trajectory
and performance of the operational rounds. The eXact iMpact / Direct Impact
250-Shot Training Kit contains 25 yellow plastic projectiles, 25 blue anodized
aluminum shell bases with set screws, and 250 propellant cartridges.

These rounds are designated for training only and if they are fired beyond 10
times, performance and accuracy may be compromised.
40mm Aerial Warning-Signaling Munitions
The 40mm Aerial Warning-Signaling Munitions series are
designed to produce 170 dB of sound output and 5 million candelas of light that
are noticeable in day or night conditions. Each munition employs a time fuze
and is manufactured to deflagrate at a set distance, either 100, 200 or 300 yards from the point of firing
depending on the specific round.
When fired at a 15-degree elevation, the munitions will
deflagrate 20 feet over the target at the specified range, which is clearly
marked on each round. There is also a tactile reference on the nose of the
round that serves as a low-light indicator of the designated distance for that
The Aerial Warning-Signaling Munitions are designed to give
the operator the ability to engage people, vehicles or vessels from a safe
stand-off position. Some of the applications for the Aerial Warning-Signaling
Munitions include directing munitions toward approaching vehicles at checkpoints
as a less-lethal way to stop potential threats; and directing the munitions
over the heads of crowds for warning or direction.
40mm Single-Shot Launcher
The Defense Technology Model
1327 40mm Single-Shot Launcher is an upgraded version of the 1325 Single-Shot
Launcher that incorporates several new features to improve performance and
functionality with the extended range munitions.
Designed to fire all Defense
Technology 37/40mm and 40mm rounds, the 40mm Single-Shot Launcher features an
aluminum rifled barrel, which comes equipped with a top and bottom 12-inch
Picatinny Rail, Front and Rear Pop-Up Adjustable Sights, Rail-Mounted
Adjustable Fore-Grip, Folding Stock with Adjustable Cheek Piece and Grip, and a
The 40mm Single Launcher will
support the use of additional optics, and accessories with the Picatinny Rails.
The upgrade provides the operator with the most accurate platform to be used
with the most accurate munitions. To that end, the adjustable cheek piece
allows the operator to adjust for proper eye relief and alignment regardless of
the optics incorporated. The launcher can be operated in single or double
action mode, ensuring optimal control and repeatable accuracy for any
situation. The folding stock allows for convenient or covert carrying and
storing of the launcher.
Defense Technology offers a
40mm 1325A Upgrade Kit that includes all of the new features, plus the Triple
Latch for extended range munitions. In addition to installing the upgraded
components at the factory, Defense Technology will inspect and adjust your
launcher and reset the warranty for two years as part of the Upgrade Kit.
Launcher Carry System
Defense Technology offers a
customizable, backpack Launcher Carry System specifically designed for mobile
field force or tactical teams. The system combines a rugged carry bag
constructed of durable 750-denier ballistic weave fabric. This carry bag is
equipped with an integral water bladder and features a cushioned, removable
The bag has wide padded
shoulder straps for comfort and support, as well as a molded, rigid foam frame
to help the bag retain its shape and reduce weight overall. The three outward
facing sides of the bag are covered with 1-inch modular PALS webbing to attach
Accessory Pouch Kit options.
Two Accessory Pouch Kits are
available. Accessory Pouch Kit #1 is focused on less-lethal
impact munitions and contains six triple munitions pouches, two single grenade
pouches, two pouches with capacity for seven munitions, and a gas mask pouch.
The Accessory Pouch Kit #2 is designed for chemical agent missions and contains
six double grenade pouches, two single grenade pouches, two pouches with
capacity for seven munitions each, and a gas mask pouch. The pouches may be
placed on either the face or side of the bag. They are constructed of
1000-denier Cordura® nylon.
