Pelican Products has recently introduced a couple of new lights geared to crime scene and investigations. The detectives with the Pasco County, Fla., Sheriff’s Office purchased the 9420XL LED Work Light Kit. Pasco County covers 747 square miles and has a population of about 470,000. According to Chief Forensic Investigator James Steffens of the Forensic Services unit, the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office is made up of 435 law enforcement deputies and 400 detention deputies.

Its forensic services unit, consisting of 11 forensic technicians and two latent print examiners, plus interns and volunteers, recently purchased a Pelican ProGear™ 9420XL LED Work Light Kit to light up crime scenes and for use in investigations. The forensics unit likes the light for its brightness, long-lasting battery, and other equipment concerns such as the fact that it is water resistant.

Within one or two days, the forensic investigators used their new 9420XL LED Work Light at seven crime scenes. One crime scene was a double homicide in a house with no electricity, and the work light illuminated the entire place. They also used it in the woods where again, there was no electricity.

ProGear 9420XL RALS Work Light

The 9420XL LED Work Light Kit and the latest variation of the Pelican ProGear™ 9420 Remote Area Lighting System (RALS) / LED Work Light are designed as lightweight, portable and powerful LED area lights. The 9420 RALS is the latest offering from Pelican’s Remote Area Lighting Group; both versions work well in many law enforcement situations.

With power to spare, the light’s two next-generation LEDs shine up to 1,000 lumens in high mode for two consecutive hours, and 500 lumens in low mode for up to four hours. Powered by a “no-maintenance” hot swap, rechargeable lithium-ion battery, the 9420XL is fully cordless and weighs in at less than 10 pounds. For instant light just about anywhere, its 5-foot mast and integrated tripod legs are fully collapsible and deploy in seconds.

This durable area light features a water-resistant polymer construction for dependability in some of the harshest conditions around. The Pelican ProGear 9420 RALS/LED Work Light has an MSRP of $240 and is available in jet black with yellow accents. Also available at an MSRP of $300 is the 9420XL kit, which features the area light and many accessories including a spare rechargeable battery, charging cradle, nylon shoulder sling, vehicle charging cable, and carrying case.

Pelican 9460 RALS and 9470 RALS for Advanced Area Lighting

The Pelican 9460 RALS and 9470 RALS are advanced, refined, and more powerful versions of the 9460 and 9470 Remote Area Lighting Systems (RALS). The 9460 and 9470 provide convenient and ecologically responsible alternatives to wasteful generator powered lights. Both lighting systems have been engineered with the Intelligent Control System, which calculates and displays current battery life, and allows the user to regulate the intensity of the light and choose the desired time.

The 9460 RALS features two swiveling telescope masts, each of which extends to nearly 6 feet, and two 360-degree, articulated light arrays. The system’s next-generation LEDs and dual power modes, with individual waterproof switches, combine to radiate up to 6,000 lumens. Powered by a rechargeable battery, the system offers up to seven hours of peak brightness with a variety of extended runtimes. It is self-contained in a 1510 Case, making it compact and providing easy ground transport with a pull handle and stainless-steel ball-bearing, polyurethane wheels.

For large-area illumination, Pelican has created the 9470 RALS, which features 24 LEDs, six on each of four heads, mounted on four 6-foot, telescoping light towers. The heads, which sport variable brightness, are powered by a 12-volt, sealed, rechargeable battery, and combine for a peak intensity of 12,000 lumens. The Pelican 1610 Case features a pull handle and transit-friendly stainless-steel ball-bearing, polyurethane wheels. Both lighting systems are available in either black or yellow.

9430 Remote-Area Lighting System

Pelican’s 9430 Remote-Area Lighting System is the new-and-improved Generation 3 version. It has up to 15 hours of burn time, 3,000 lumens of brightness, six LEDs, and a beam spread of 125 inches. The 9430 is described as having a maintenance-free LED array with life expectancy of 50,000 hours.

It has a fully extendable mast with a 360-degree rotating head; a low-battery warning system with intermittent blinking; a waterproof rubber activation switch; and mast extension lock. Its 12-volt battery has a burn time 15 hours on low and eight hours on high, and a battery charging time of five hours after a full discharge. Other features include an extended mast height of 32 inches. The 9430 Remote Area Lighting System is available in yellow or black.

9410 LED Lantern

According to Pelican, the 9410 LED Lantern is the brightest in its class. At just three pounds and 741 lumens on high mode, the new 9410 LED Lantern has power without weight. Four LEDs are powered by the latest-generation NiMH batteries to illuminate a distance of 450 yards, compared to a conventional lantern, which illuminates just over 100 yards. Its compact size and high output is especially useful in searching for evidence, tracking into the brush, or looking for a missing child or fugitive.

Features include a 120-degree rotating head, which can be used to direct the light to where it is needed; a runtime of 4.75 hours on low and 1.75 hours on high; and a battery status indicator: green for full charge, amber for medium, and red for low. It also has a Smart Switch, tactile micro-controller mode switch (high, low, flashing and off), and can be turned from any mode to off without cycling. The 9410 measures 8.75 inches x 3.75 inches x 4.0 inches.

Its charge base mounts on wall or vehicle, and holds the lantern in place as it charges its NiMH battery. Four NiMH batteries come with the 9410. The charge time of the battery pack is five hours. The lantern has a comfortable non-slip handle designed for bare hands or gloved. It comes with a quick-release shoulder strap that prevents entanglements.

The 9410 is approved to NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) 1901, meaning that it has been shock and vibration tested to vehicle mount specifications.
